Study USA: US President Donald Trump's crackdown is now being implemented on major universities and colleges in America. This includes three students of Harvard University and two recently graduated students. Their visas have been cancelled. This incident happened amid Trump's move to deport international students involved in pro-Palestine protests.
According to an email sent to international students by the Harvard International Office, the visas were cancelled during a routine record review. However, the names of the students have not been disclosed. The office wrote in the email, "We are not aware of the details of the visa cancellations and their reasons. But we understand that students and scholars in institutions across the country have faced such action at this time." It further reads that Harvard gives great importance to those international students and scholars who come here to learn and grow.
Trump's visa policy also affects UCLA.
Like Harvard, the US government has cancelled the visas of six students of the University of California, Los Angeles. UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said in a message to the campus community that the visas of six current and six former students have been revoked. He said that these figures may change.
Why were the visas revoked?
According to the report, during a routine audit of SEVIS records, UCLA officials found that the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) had terminated the SEVIS status of six current students. SEVP has terminated the status of six former students who participated in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. The mail further states that the termination notice indicates that all the individuals have been terminated due to violation of visa rules. However, UCLA is not aware of any federal law enforcement activity on campus related to these terminations.
300 student visas revoked across the country
According to the report, at least 300 student visas have been revoked across the US. According to NBC Los Angeles, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the number at a news conference in Guyana, and claimed the administration does this “every day.”
