Taking a look at the most charming indie games that launched on console and PC between huge, AAA releases this past month.

You never have to look far to find a good indie game to play. And in case wasn’t enough to unabashedly proved this fact, March didn’t disappoint once again.

Sure, there were plenty of heavy-hitters like and to sink your teeth into, but between these giant experiences there were plenty of smaller treats to cosy up with or become invested in – most likely (as in my case) on But what were some of our March indie game favourites? You’ve come to the right place.

The following is a list of what we deem to be 10 of the best indie games released in March 2025. From ship-based clean-em-ups to highly evocative isometric roguelikes set in an alternate medieval universe, there certainly was a diverse selection on offer. Let’s get into it…

Wanderstop

As soon as you hear that the talent behind previous indie hits like Gone Home and The Stanley Parable are teaming up to make a different kind of cosy game, it’s hard not to be intrigued. Well, it’s safe to say that Wanderstop not only met the lofty expectations I had but outright blew right past them, with the game being one of 2025’s earliest delights for all the ways it encourages you to relax, unwind, and brew tea. It sounds like a recipe for relaxation anyway, but layered on top is a worthwhile lesson about how to manage burnout and why it’s important to take care of yourself. I ended up loving Wanderstop for the ways it encourages players to take a step back from the rush of life.

Odinfall

Not since Enter the Gungeon have I had as much fun in a roguelike twin-stick shooter until I played Odinfall. Although still in early access right now, it’s a genuinely fast, frantic, and thrilling top-down adventure where I found my quick-thinking skills truly tested as I moved from randomly generated biome to biome. With a good number of quirky weapons to fire and plenty of upgrades to enhance them with, fighting your way through Ragnarok in service of Loki’s floating head is simply a blast. Purely from mechanics alone Odinfall is brilliant, but the Viking-themed iconography takes it up a level.

Reignbreaker

I know, I know… yet another isometric actioner that lifts the basic structure and format of Hades but places on it a whole new art style? As similar as Reignbreaker might first appear on the surface, however, I’m pleased to report that it utilises its medieval-punk world and universe to great effect, feeling more distinct from its inspirations than you might think. Dashing and smashing through all kinds of robots is never not fun, and I found my playstyle surprisingly easy to customise thanks to a raft of ways to upgrade the main character’s mighty Javelin weapon. There is some semblance of a story here, but Reignbreaker’s appeal is the uniqueness of its runs alongside its creative bosses.

Squirreled Away

Surviving and crafting within a wide open-world as a human is often challenging enough – just look at the likes of Rust, Ark: Survival Evolved, or even . That’s why Squirreled Away feels like a welcome breath of fresh air, by comparison, placing you in a colourful city woodland while playing as one of the titular critters who must forage, gather, and craft your way across rivers and treetops. Whether it’s by assisting other local wildlife such as hedgehogs or birds in their goals or pouring all your resources into making a dream treehouse, Squirreled Away well and truly understands the assignment. It’s backed up my snappy movement and exploration, made even better by the ability to be joined by three other players where you can explore your own personalised nature park.

Expelled!

One of the highlights of my lockdown experience (if any) was repeatedly playing through Inkle’s short but satisfying detective visual novel, Overboard! Whereas this initial entry was set on a boat and tasked you with getting away with the titular crime, sequel adventure Expelled! fleshes the concept out further by placing you in the shoes of a student suddenly framed for murder. As was the case previously, how you go about getting out of this scenario successfully is totally up to you, whether you want to try and find the correct culprit through your actions and decisions or blame someone else entirely. Expelled! is a more ambitious take on Inkle’s choice-driven mystery concept and is mostly all the better for it.

Spilled!

Cosy exploration meets intricate oils spill clean-ups in the appropriately titled Spilled, a short but sweet boat-based adventure that sees you driving and upgrading your ship through all kinds of idyllic rivers. The result is an oddly relaxing experience, one where you can feel good about yourself due to the underlying ecological message present. Not to mention it’s also beautiful to look at due to its unique isometric art style, which sits somewhere between pixels and polygons. Spilled! only takes an hour or so to finish, yet it’s time well spent due to how fulfilling it can be to move through unique biomes doing your bit to improve the environment.

Slime Heroes

Don’t be fooled by the cutesy art style and ridiculously colourful world Slime Heroes presents. The eponymous slimes you and your friends play as in this whimsical actioner are actually capable of much destruction – as are the enemies. Between magic attack skills that can either drain your enemies of crucial stats such as health or deal damage based on elemental powers like fire and ice, Slime Heroes quickly had me enthralled with its surprisingly creative combat. Throw in plenty of dungeons to plunder and loot that is (thankfully) shared between you and partner, and Slime Heroes is a pretty great entry point to the Soulslike genre for players young and old.

Tile Tales: Pirate

Combining the treasure plundering antics of piracy with some seriously satisfying tile sliding, there’s nothing especially unique or revolutionary about Tile Tales: Pirate since the concept is fairly self-explanatory. However, it doesn’t take long for your pirate captain to bump into some truly tricky scenarios, all of which give you that good kind of brain scratch that often makes you feel like a genius. There are well over 90 unique tile puzzles to move through in total across various kinds of worlds that range from beaches to literal graveyards. The fewer slides you have to perform, the better your final rating, and it makes for a wildly satisfying time.

Shadow of the Orient

Anyone who reads these monthly indie game roundups regularly knows that I’m partial to a solid action-platformer, reminiscent of the kinds we use to see dominate the scene in the early to late 90s. Ticking this box for March is none other than Shadow of the Orient, a love letter to Chinese action cinema that sees you fighting through caves, snow, and mountains in pretty stylish pixelated fashion. You play as a young warrior wielding the power of fireballs, swords, and giant axes in a bid to rescue children at threat from a dark lord threatening the East. Shadow of the Orient won’t take you long to finish, but it hits the spot for anyone seeking a solid retro style action-platformer.

Special mention: Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars

Having heard about the brilliance of ’s first two Suikoden RPGs for years on end, it was a real treat to dive into them as part the recent Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars collection. Questionably long title aside, this is essentially a complete graphical overhaul and general tidying up of those first two games, where much of the joy comes from building up a frankly gigantic party of heroes and deploying their skills effectively as the world slowly opens up to you across tens of hours. I really appreciate, too, that the Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster didn’t go the HD-2D route as popularised by . Instead, the original Suikoden pixel art is allowed to flourish, now clearer and brighter than before.
