CrimeRate stated Hackney, Middlesbrough, and Leeds are the most dangerous areas for , but burglars use key markings wherever they are. According to a security expert, there are eight markings you need to be watchful of, which burglars use to mark the targeted

Chalk markings can be put onto walls, bricks or window ledges; the symbols could also be written on wheelie bins, fences, pavements near your home, or even on a nearby lamp post. A security expert from CJS Automation said: "Burglars are always looking for easy targets. If they see weak locks, no security cameras, or signs that a home is unoccupied, they will move in."

If you spot any of the suspicious markings above near or on your home, it's crucial to take a picture of it before removing it.

The security expert warned that criminals don't usually target a single home-they scout entire streets, so it's best to inform your neighbours of your findings.

It's also a good decision to report the mark to the local police department, which may check burglar activity in the area and provide extra patrols.

The expert added: "The best defence is to remove suspicious markings, improve your home security, and stay aware of what's happening in your neighbourhood."

What the police say

The police said "burglars are often opportunistic thieves" that look for doors or windows that have been left open. "Anything of value that they might spot through a window will only spur them on," the police noted.

Sometimes, a burglary is done to gain access to a vehicle parked outside the house; this is because the thieves are looking for the keys.

The police added: "Sheds and garages are often vulnerable as they are not that secure and contain tools which the burglar can use to assist them to gain entry to a home."

And if you have had the unfortunate experience of being burgled, that actually makes your house more of a target.

The police stated, "it's a fact that burglars return to homes that they've previously burgled because the homeowner failed to upgrade security following the first burglary".

And a burglary nearby means your house is also more likely to be a target the next time around.

This is why it's crucial to keep your home as safe as possible with tight security features.
