New Delhi: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is once again in the headlines. This time he made a controversial remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, on which politics has become hot. The Mahayuti Sarkar condemned Kamra's statement and demanded an apology from him, while the opposition party Shiv Sena (UBT) came out in his support. Meanwhile, Shinde reacted that there should also be a limit to freedom of expression and compared Kamra's sarcasm by taking “betel nut” to speak against someone.
Kunal Kamra has been in many controversies earlier also. In 2020, he made a controversial statement about the Supreme Court and the then Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, in which he called the Supreme Court “Supreme Joke of the Country”. On this, the Supreme Court had issued a notice of contempt, but Kamra refused to apologize. The same year, he harassed journalist Arnab Goswami in a flight, whose video went viral. Due to this, many airlines including IndiGo, Air India were banned for six months.
Kamra also shared an edited video in 2020, in which a child's song was made mocked during PM Modi's visit to Germany. On this, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) demanded action against him. In addition, in 2022, he made a controversial remarks about Hindu deities, after which the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) sent a legal notice and his show in Gurugram was canceled.
During the Kovid epidemic in 2021, he criticized the policies of the government, alleging that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders had taken the right steps in time, many lives could have been saved. Recently he also argued with Ola Electric CEO Bhavish Aggarwal when he targeted Ola over the problems of customers. Bhavish offered Kamra even a job in his company, but Kamra agreed on the condition that the complaints of the customers be resolved soon. Apart from this, he has also questioned the EVM and the Election Commission. At the same time, he has also been in the discussion about supporting Umar Khalid, accused of Delhi violence. Kunal Kamra is often engulfed in controversies for his statements and sarcasm, but he persists on his stand citing freedom of expression.
