Marks & Spencer recently doubled its 'Only... ingredients' range, with the launch of 12 new lines including sausages, chipolatas, burgers, meatballs, yoghurts, porridge and condiments. The range has gained Only 6 Ingredients Heritage Gold Pork Sausages, Only 6 Ingredients Heritage Gold Pork Chipolatas, Only 3 Ingredients British Beef Burgers, and Only 3 Ingredients British Beef Meatballs. They are the first meat products to be added to the range, which initially launched last year with bread and cereals.

Other new additions for this year include Only 3 Ingredients Steel Cut Porridge, Only 5 Ingredients Yoghurt in raspberry and rhubarb flavours, Only 6 Ingredients Olive Oil Mayonnaise and Only 8 Ingredients Tomato Ketchup. I love trying different foods, and so I decided to try a range of items, both old and new, to see if they were worth the money.

I decided to try both the mayonnaise and ketchup as well as the Only 5 Ingredients Bran Flakes, Only 4 Ingredients White Sliced Toasting Loaf, Only 3 Ingredients British Beef Meatballs and the Only 3 Ingredients Avocado Oil Crisps.

White sliced toasting loaf

The four ingredients in this loaf are multi-flour, water, salt, and yeast, very similar to what you would use to make homemade bread.

This bread had a delicious texture with a soft middle and crusty crust. However, there wasn't much flavour, because I'm probably used to adding butter into my sandwich bread, or sometimes warm milk.

I don't think I'd pay £2.25 for it again, however, as I can make one at home for much cheaper. It was handy to be pre-sliced so I could freeze it and just grab a couple of slices when needed.

Score: 5/10

Bran flakes

The Only 3 Ingredients Bran Flakes joins a fairly long list of cereals from M&S's range, including choco hoops, multigrain hoops, corn flakes and more.

The ingredients listed are wholegrain wheat, barley malt extract and sea salt. This is a very different ingredient list from other alternatives I've seen in the supermarket, which I loved to see, as cereal isn't always the healthiest in terms of additives and sugar.

The bran flakes are £1.50 more than M&S's cheaper alternative, which doesn't even contain that many ingredients either. While they were tasty and I couldn't taste much of a difference between other bran flakes I've eaten, I don't think I'd pay £2.50 for a small box again.

Price: 6/10

Avocado oil crisps

The ingredients listed on the crisps include potatoes, avocado oil and Mediterranean sea salt, and I have to say, they are absolutely delicious.

After being taken aback by the price at the beginning, I soon realised why they were so expensive, because they contain oil and salt, two expensive ingredients.

Everything about these crisps was perfect, including the delicate crunch and flavour, and a bag lasted me over a week.

I would really recommend trying these crisps if you fancy a treat at the end of a week, because for £3.75, I had to be persuaded to try them too.

Score: 10/10

Tomato ketchup

I absolutely love tomato ketchup, and have tried a variety of supermarket ones over the last year or so.

The ingredients listed in this ketchup include tomato puree, agave syrup, water, vinegar, salt and a variety of ground spices.

It was £2.25 for a 250ml bottle, which is one of the most expensive on the market.

While I found it tasty and have used it ever since, I did think it tasted a little more like tomato puree than ketchup, as it was thicker.

M&S's other alternative sauce does contain a preservative, but the ingredients list isn't awfully long, and it's only £1 for a nearly 500g bottle, so I'm unsure if I would buy the expensive bottle again.

Score: 7/10

Olive oil mayonnaise

This mayonnaise is made with just six ingredients: olive oil, egg yolk, white wine vinegar, water, sea salt, and dried mustard.

It's a whopping £4.50 for a 250g jar, and this had to be the worst-tasting mayonnaise I've ever had.

It was way too salty for my liking, and although it was smooth, it was way too rich for me, even when trying a tiny bit on some chips.

I've tried it a few times to see whether I could begin to like it, but I just can't, even when mixed into a tuna mayonnaise.

Score: 2/10

Chipolatas and meatballs

The six ingredients in the sausages and chipolatas make a list far shorter than those found in standard supermarket alternatives. M&S' British Outdoor-Bred Pork Butchers' Sausages list more than 20 ingredients.

However, this does mean the meat items have a shorter shelf life, but I was able to freeze the meatballs for later use.

The Heritage Gold Pork Chipolatas contain six ingredients: pork, water, sage, black pepper, sea salt, and natural sheep casings.

These were delicious, and you could really taste the better quality. I love sausages, but I don't often love the ingredient list, so it was great to eat something better for me, despite the price being a whopping £4 for 12 sausages.

The meatballs were also handy to have in the freezer to use for a quick dinner, and they had a delicious flavour and texture, perfect with spaghetti. However, again, I didn't love the price, especially because the meatballs themselves were quite small.

I also don't think spending £3.75 on 12 meatballs was entirely worth it other than for convenience, because you can easily buy a packet of mince and make them up yourself.

However, they were delicious, and I loved knowing that they were not processed.

Overall, I loved the range, but I didn't love the price tag. However, less processed items are going to be more expensive; it's just a matter of whether you can afford or justify the extra cost.

Since cutting back on ultra-processed foods, my skin and energy levels have been much higher, but I definitely think it's a luxury and privilege in this economy to incorporate these foods into my diet.

Some foods, such as chipolatas and crisps, I would definitely continue to buy, but other items not so much.
