What does the PAN number mean?
The unique ID given on the PAN card provides several pieces of information about you. These are as follows:

The first three numbers in the PAN number are English letters. These can range from AAA to ZZZ.

The fourth letter indicates which tax category the cardholder belongs to. For example, if the cardholder is an individual, it is represented by the letter P.  A company is represented by the letter C.

The fifth number is the first letter of your surname. For example, if the surname is Sharma, the 5th number will be S. The subsequent numbers are determined by the Income Tax Department.

How many categories of PAN cards are there?
PAN cards are different for companies, individuals, and foreign citizens. If an Indian citizen wants to apply for a PAN card, they have to fill out Form 49A. If a foreign citizen wants to apply for a PAN card, they have to fill out Form 49AA.

PAN cards are used for filing ITR, applying for schemes, opening bank accounts, and other purposes. You also need a PAN card if you are receiving financial benefits from any government scheme.

Even if you are receiving a government subsidy, you will need to use your PAN card.
