Shocking news that Liverpool's star football player Diogo Jota lost his life in a tragic car accident earlier this week has left people heartbroken, especially as it came just days after Diogo married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso.

His funeral is taking place today (Saturday, July 5), starting at 10am this morning in Gondomar, a half-hour drive inland from Porto. Priest Jose Manuel Macedo is overseeing the funeral at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar catholic church, and Portugal's president Marcelo de Sousa has confirmed he will be among those in attendance.

Diogo was a star on the football pitch and was a part of Liverpool's PremierLeague-winning team for the 2024-2025 season. The trophy was the fourth that Diogo had won with the club and came just two months before his death, HELLO! reports.

Not only did the car crash leave his beloved Rute widowed, but it also left the football star's three young children without a father.

During their relationship, the couple welcomed two sons, Denis and Duarte, and a daughter whose name hasn't been made public. The young girl was born in November 2024, months before her father's death.

And while no amount of money will make up for his tragic death at such a young age, the star has left behind quite a fortune for his family.

The striker was worth £13 million at the time of his death, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Diogo had a reported salary of £5 million and could earn an extra £1.4 million in bonuses depending on his performance on the pitch.

Alongside this, the star was said to be earning an extra £1 million through brand sponsorship deals with major companies, including Nike and EA Sports, as well as £2 million through competitive gaming and associated investments. The footballing legend also had a £2 million luxury villa in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and owned several luxury cars.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot offered his condolences following Diogo's heartbreaking death. He said: "Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us.

"I could say so much about what he brought to our team but the truth is everyone who watched Diogo play could see it. Hard work, desire, commitment, great quality, goals. The essence of what a Liverpool player should be."

Meanwhile, Liverpool Football Club said they are "devastated" by the death of Jota. In a statement, the club said: "Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.
