France is reeling from a wave of disturbing syringe attacks reported during nationwide music festivals, with at least 145 people stabbed with needles across the country.

According to the Interior Ministry, the attacks occurred during outdoor music events, with 13 cases reported in Paris alone.

Authorities have arrested 12 individuals in connection with the incidents, though details surrounding the motive, the exact substance in the syringes, and whether the attacks were coordinated remain unclear. In some cities, including Metz and Paris, terrified concert-goers reported being jabbed unexpectedly in crowded venues. The shocking phenomenon has sparked fears of a needle-spiking resurgence, similar to those reported in the UK and elsewhere in Europe in previous years.

Reports And Warnings Before Attacks

Social media warnings preceded the events. Feminist influencer Abrege Soeur issued an alert online, citing vague posts on platforms like Snapchat that allegedly called for women to be targeted with syringes during the festival. Authorities have not confirmed the origin or credibility of those social media messages.

Local media outlet Le Republicain Lorrain reported that several syringe attacks occurred in Metz, including at the Place de la République and Place Saint-Jacques. Mayor François Grosdidier stated that the first incident was reported at 9:15 PM on Rue du Palais, and emergency services responded rapidly. Seven emergency vehicles were deployed, and a victim assembly point was set up at Place d'Armes.

According to Grosdidier, one suspect was identified and arrested on Rue Serpenoise after being caught on surveillance footage. The man, identified by one of the victims, was handed over to national authorities. However, no syringes were found on him at the time of arrest, and investigators are analysing his cellphone for further leads.

At least three victims felt unwell after being jabbed, although officials have not confirmed whether substances like Rohypnol or GHB, commonly associated with date-rape drug spiking, were involved.

Crowds Unfazed Despite Attacks

Despite these disturbing incidents, the music festival drew massive crowds, with 50,000 attendees in Metz and millions across France participating in the celebrations. Attendees seemed largely undeterred by the social media warnings and subsequent news of the attacks.

As of now, 13 active cases are being investigated in Paris, with authorities emphasising the seriousness of the matter. Investigations are ongoing, and officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. More arrests may follow as digital evidence and eyewitness accounts continue to be analysed.
