Lara Rajagopalan, an Indian-origin American and a member of HYBE's Los Angeles-based girl group KATSEYE, was falsely reported to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The report, allegedly filed by a K-pop fan, appears to be the result of rising tensions from ongoing fan wars on social media.

A netizen on X (formerly Twitter) has come under fire after falsely reporting Lara as an undocumented immigrant. The claim surfaced during a period of increased immigration enforcement in the US, amplifying anger among fans and drawing sharp criticism across social media platforms.

ICE raids intensify under Donald Trump's deportation push

The timing of the incident aligns with a sweeping immigration crackdown under the Donald Trump administration, which is being described as the most extensive in US history. The operation sets a goal of 3,000 daily arrests, concentrating efforts on Democratic-led cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago.

The expanded scope of ICE activity—reaching into private homes, public spaces, and even courthouses—has drawn sharp criticism for bypassing due process and disproportionately targeting minorities, including US citizens and Indigenous communities.

Lara Raj's legal status confirmed; fans defend her

As a verified US citizen, Lara was the subject of a baseless and potentially harmful accusation. The false report not only misrepresented her legal status but also risked affecting her career and personal well-being.

Outraged by the act, fans quickly responded, highlighting the seriousness of such misinformation. KATSEYE's dedicated fanbase, Eyekons, has since taken action by reporting the account responsible and rallying in support of Lara.

ILLIT fan allegedly behind the report

The incident has caused tensions between KATSEYE and ILLIT fandom. The user who filed the false ICE report was seen using a profile image of ILLIT's Wonhee, leading to speculation that the move was tied to fan rivalry.

While it remains unclear whether the individual is genuinely connected to the ILLIT fandom, many see the act as a dangerous example of how far fan conflicts can escalate in the digital space.

Fans demand action from HYBE

In the wake of the incident, fans are demanding that HYBE take swift and decisive action to protect Lara and other artists from harmful false reporting and online harassment. Many believe that involving federal agencies in such malicious acts is a serious offense that warrants accountability.

The controversy has also reignited broader conversations about the safety of idols, the role of fandoms in fostering a healthy environment, and the responsibility of entertainment companies to intervene and prevent further harm.
