I am the daughter of a chill dad. Not many get to say that. It carries a level of trust my dad has in me and a level of fun he brings to my life. He’s always been one to say yes to all experiences, the one who meets my boyfriend and offers him a drink.
He knows when to be a parent and when to give the kind of valuable advice I’ll cherish forever.
It’s not often that he sits me down and actually talks about serious things but he has his way of teaching me lessons I never knew I’d need. So, this Father’s Day, I decided to sit down and curate a list of 7 things my dad taught me without ever having a big talk.

He says yes to experiences, to travel plans, to spontaneity. Whether it was school trips or putting me on a plane to Goa last minute to go see my friends, he always says yes. He believes in life in moderation but will never deny a chance to have a good time.

A man who married his college sweetheart always told me to only give 49% in love. He said that keeping 51% for yourself is the key to never settling for less (okay, math king go off!!)

My dad left his cushy marketing job to pursue his dream of being a skating coach. He now rolls through life and teaches others to do the same. He’s a sportsman in its true sense. His wild pursuit (breaking records in his field) taught me to never back down from my own dreams.

It’s difficult being a person from a generation before Gen Z. The world opened up and he stayed with the times. My dad has always been a liberal man but to be someone who actually listens to his children and values our knowledge as a learning curve for him is something I’m always in awe of.
You’re Never Too Young For Anything © Instagram/Alia Bhatt
This is a man who roller-skated from Bombay to Delhi at the tender age of 22. Age was never a factor to him and he passed that onto me. I have never felt like I’m too young for anything. In his own way, he taught me to be independent and never restrain myself.

My dad is a child at heart. He still goes to supermarkets and picks up a bunch of snacks he doesn’t need. He teases his friends and family like he’s still in college. He works with kids so it makes sense that he knows how to stay young but it’s also always been his philosophy. He’s the first one on roller coasters, the first one to play a prank and the first one to hit the dance floor.
Always Go The Extra Mile © Instagram/Kunal Kemmu
This is a man who fills the petrol in my mom’s car before she can even think to do it. He drops and picks up every single one of my family members to and from the airport (even when he’s busy). He goes the extra mile. He always told me to call him from a late night out and he would come and get me. He is dependable and quite literally defines what it means to be the man of the house.
Being a man in its traditional sense is outdated and he proves time and again that he’s just a selfless modern husband and dad who wants us to be safe and happy.
