Tragic Incident in Ahmedabad
New Delhi, June 12: Renowned Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri expressed his sorrow regarding the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, extending his thoughts and prayers to those impacted by this unfortunate event.
Chhetri shared his feelings on Instagram, stating, "I am heartbroken by the news from Ahmedabad. My prayers and strength are with everyone affected by this tragic occurrence."
The Air India flight, which was headed to London, took off from Ahmedabad Airport at 1:38 PM and was carrying 242 individuals, including 12 crew members. Among the passengers were 169 Indians, 53 British citizens, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals.
According to Air India, flight AI171 was en route to Gatwick Airport in London. The airline has established a dedicated hotline at 1800 5691 444 for families seeking more information.
The aircraft was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who has logged 8,200 hours of flight time, along with First Officer Clive Kundar, who has 1,100 hours of experience, as reported by officials.
Air Traffic Control (ATC) noted that the plane took off from Runway 23 at 1:39 PM IST (08:09 UTC) and issued a mayday call shortly after, but there was no further communication from the aircraft.
"The aircraft, shortly after its departure from Runway 23, crashed outside the airport's perimeter, with heavy black smoke visible from the site," an official stated.
In response to the tragedy, the Tata Group announced a compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of each victim of the Air India flight crash. The group, which owns Air India, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, shared, "We are profoundly saddened by the tragic event involving Air India Flight 171. Words cannot express the grief we feel at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and those who have been injured."
He further stated, "Tata Group will provide ₹1 crore to the families of each individual who lost their life in this tragedy. We will also cover medical expenses for the injured and ensure they receive the necessary care and support. Additionally, we will assist in the development of the B J Medical's hostel," he added.
"We are committed to supporting the affected families and communities during this incredibly difficult time," he concluded.
