Air India Plane Crash: Former Chief Minister of Gujarat Vijay Rupani was riding in Air India aircraft AI171 on 12 June 2025 in Ahmedabad. This Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was flying to the Gatwick Airport in London, crashed into Meghani Nagar area only a few minutes after the takeoff. The aircraft consisted of 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Rupani was named 12th in the passenger list and was traveling in business class (Z class). According to sources, Rupani was traveling to bring his wife Anjaliben Rupani back from London, who had been living there for the last six months. His daughter also lives in London.

Birth and early life: Vijay Ramniklal Rupani was born on 2 August 1956 in Rangoon (now Yangon), a Jain Baniya family in Myanmar. In 1960, his family moved to Rajkot, India due to political instability. He earned BA from Saurashtra University in 1977 and LLB degree in 1980.
Vijay Rupani political career:
Vijay Ramniklal Rupani is a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat from 7 August 2016 to 11 September 2021. He also won from Rajkot West seat in 2017 and retained the post of Chief Minister.
He worked as a minister in Rajkot’s Mayor in 1996–1997, Rajya Sabha MP in 2006-2012 and ministries like Transport, Labor, Water Supply.
In 2014, he became an MLA from Rajkot West and later also the President of Gujarat BJP.
Jail during Emergency: Vijay Ramniklal Rupani went to jail during the Emergency of 1975-77. Rupani was associated with RSS and was imprisoned in jail due to his political activities. This was an important part of his early political life.
