Mumbai: In a major administrative move, the Maharashtra Home Department has issued a Government Resolution (GR) to restructure a top post in the Mumbai Police. The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP)-level vacant post of Special Commissioner of Police (Special CP) in Mumbai has now been downgraded to the rank of Inspector General (IG).

The revised designation of this post will be Joint Commissioner of Police, Intelligence, and it will function under the Commissioner of Police, Brihanmumbai. The decision aims to strengthen Mumbai’s intelligence gathering and surveillance capabilities in light of the city’s high security demands.

As the financial capital of India and home to numerous “A” category sensitive installations and high-profile individuals, Mumbai requires a robust intelligence and security framework. The city also regularly hosts visits from dignitaries, including the president, the prime minister, the vice president, and various foreign heads of state and ministers, making constant vigilance crucial.

The newly created post of Joint CP (Intelligence) will be tasked with closely monitoring intelligence inputs and coordinating enhanced security measures, especially during VVIP visits. The resolution emphasises the importance of a strong security system for key areas and high-risk individuals.

The move was made under the powers granted to the state government by Section 5 and 7 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, and the official government decision has been digitally signed and published on the state’s website, www.maharashtra.gov.in. This restructuring reflects the state government’s strategic focus on intelligence-led policing and proactive security management in Mumbai, ensuring the city remains safe.
