FBI uncovers 2,400 new records related to JFK assassination

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has unearthed some 2,400 new records related to the assassination of President John F Kennedy. The trove includes some 14,000 pages that had not been reviewed before.

The documents were discovered in accordance with an executive order by United States President Donald Trump, requiring the declassification and release of all remaining files related to JFK's assassination.

President Trump's executive order also calls for the release of files related to the assassinations of Robert F Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

The order stresses that "The families and the American people deserve transparency and truth," and withholding these records is "not consistent with the public interest."

In his first administration, Trump had promised full disclosure but released only about 2,800 documents after pressure from intelligence agencies.

Investigation update

Notably, the FBI's announcement comes as a new congressional task force led by Anna Paulina Luna has hinted that two shooters were involved in JFK's assassination.

Luna slammed past investigations and said, "I believe that there were two shooters."

Her allegations contradict the Warren Commission's findings but are in line with the House Select Committee on Assassinations' conclusion that JFK was "probably assassinated as a result of a conspiracy."

Declassification progress

Jefferson Morley of the Mary Ferrell Foundation, which hosts one of the largest online collections of JFK assassination records, said of the findings, "This is huge. It shows the FBI is taking this seriously."

According to the National Archives, over 99% of roughly 320,000 documents reviewed under the JFK Records Act have been released. However, less than 4,700 records remain withheld in part or full.
