New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a plea of former media executive Indrani Mukerjea seeking permission to travel abroad. Mukerjea is accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora. The top court directed the trial court to expeditiously complete the trial in the Sheena Bora murder case.

A key accused in her daughter Sheena Bora’s murder case, Mukerjea is currently out on bail. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal directed the trial court to conduct the proceedings in the case within a year.

Opposing the permission, the counsel for the CBI said this is a sensitive matter and trial has come halfway and 96 witnesses have been examined.

The counsel appearing for Mukerjea, submitted that she has been given bail by the top court and there are 92 witnesses still to be examined in the matter.

She said the trial court has been vacant for the last four months and the proceedings may take a long time to conclude.

Last year in September, the Bombay High Court (HC) also quashed special court order permitting Mukherjea to travel abroad.

On July 19, a special CBI court allowed Mukerjea to travel once to Spain and the UK for ten days between intermittent periods over the next three months. Mukerjea had sought permission to travel abroad claiming that she needed to change certain bank-related documents and other ancillary work after her divorce with Peter Mukerjea.

The CBI approached the high court challenging the order passed by the special court. The high court quashed the special court's order on September 27.

Mukerjea moved the apex court challenging this high court order.
