Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s newly appointed governor, Brajmohan Ram , was sworn in on Sunday by Chief Justice of Orissa high court, Justice Harish Tandon , in the presence of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and others at Lok Bhavan here.
Ram, 68, succeeds Hari Babu Kambhampati. President Droupadi Murmu appointed him to the constitutional post on Oct 12.
Welcoming the new governor, Majhi wrote on X: “Under the guidance of his excellency the governor, Odisha’s journey of development will gain further momentum. I wish him a successful tenure.”
Leader of the opposition and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik also wished Ram a fruitful tenure. “Wish, under your leadership, the august office reaffirms the constitutional values in true democratic spirit,” Naveen wrote on X.
A native of Palamu district in Jharkhand, Ram represented the Palamu Lok Sabha constituency three times, winning elections in 1996, 1998 and 1999, when the region was part of undivided Bihar. He also served as an MLA in the undivided Bihar assembly from 1991 to 1995. Before his appointment as governor, Ram headed the BJP’s scheduled caste morcha in Jharkhand.
He took the oath days after a controversy over alleged earlier remarks about helping the BJP secure votes in the state. The comments drew criticism ahead of his swearing-in ceremony, prompting Ram to clarify that his remarks were taken out of context and misrepresented.
