New Delhi. Important news to savings has come out for government employees during Diwali and festival season. According to the information provided by the Finance Ministry, the interest rate on General Provident Fund (GPF) for the October-December quarter of the financial year 2026-27 has been kept at 7.1 percent per annum. That means there has been no change in the previous rate.


This interest rate is said to be fixed for the period from October 1 to December 31, 2026. GPF rates are reviewed from time to time, so that the information about interest available on the savings deposited by government employees remains clear.


On which funds will the interest rate be applicable?


The stated rate of 7.1 percent is also applicable to many other provident funds linked to the government along with GPF. These include Central Services, Defense Services and All India Services Provident Fund, apart from State Railways and some other departmental funds.


Which employees will get the benefit?


The facility of GPF is available to eligible government employees, who deposit a part of their salary in this fund. Interest keeps getting added on the deposited amount and as per the rules, the fund amount is received at the time of retirement. Generally this facility is to eligible employees covered under the old pension system. Employees covered under NPS generally do not get the facility of GPF.


7.1% interest benefit on PPF also


It is also a matter of relief for those investing in small savings schemes. According to the information given, the interest rate of Public Provident Fund (PPF) has also been maintained at 7.1 percent for the quarter October-December 2026.
