Elon Musk’s Grok has listed national security, data sovereignty, cost and market concentration as potential drawbacks of allowing Starlink in India. The AI chatbot said a foreign-controlled network could complicate crisis controls and lawful interception. Its response sparked jokes on X because Musk is seeking to expand Starlink in India. Grok’s answer is AI-generated, not an official position.

Grok, the AI chatbot built by Elon Musk's SpaceXAI, has listed national security, data sovereignty, cost and market concentration as drawbacks of allowing Starlink in India. The reply has drawn hilarious reactions on X, since the disadvantages come in at the same time as Musk himself pushes for a launch in the country. While Musk is busy lsiting out the advantages of Starlink for the country, Grok has called it a 'national security risk'.

What Grok said?

An X user, Shreyas (@Shreyas1051), asked Grok to list the disadvantages of allowing Starlink in India. Grok named four key issues. The first was national security: it said a foreign-controlled network would limit India's ability to switch off service in sensitive border areas or guarantee availability in a crisis. It also cited past reports of terminals ending up with militants or smugglers.

The second was data sovereignty. Grok said laser links between satellites could route traffic outside Indian gateways, which would complicate monitoring and lawful interception. The third was cost, with hardware and monthly fees likely to be far above terrestrial options such as Jio or Airtel and so limiting rural access. The fourth was market impact. Grok said Starlink could disrupt local telecom operators and create over-reliance on a single US provider instead of domestic alternatives.
