Amritsar : The anti-ragging committee of Government Medical College (GMC) has submitted its detailed inquiry report to the director-principal on allegations of ragging involving eight senior MBBS students . The students, who were suspended following a preliminary inquiry, will remain under suspension until the college takes a final decision on the matter.




GMC vice-principal Dr J P Attri said on Friday that the suspension was ordered on the basis of a preliminary report submitted by the college’s anti-ragging team. The committee has now completed its detailed investigation and submitted its findings to the director-principal, who will decide the nature of action to be taken against the students.




The eight senior students were suspended after junior students raised apprehensions that the seniors had visited their hostel rooms and might subject them to ragging. The matter came to light after the juniors informed their family members and the college administration.




Attri said the college had also received representations from the parents of the suspended students seeking details of the alleged violations and questioning the grounds on which their children had been suspended.




He said the anti-ragging committee examined the conduct of each student, including the latest incident and their past behaviour, to determine whether any action amounted to a violation of anti-ragging regulations.




“The committee has examined the allegations against each student and categorised the alleged violations according to their nature,” Attri said.




He added that the report also assessed whether the alleged acts constituted minor or major violations. Even entering a prohibited area of the hostel or engaging in conduct that could cause mental pressure or distress to junior students could amount to a violation, depending on the circumstances, he said.




Attri said the director-principal would now examine the report and decide the further course of action against the eight students. He added that a final decision is likely to be taken by Oct 5.
