Patna : Patna will get a new sewage management system to stop untreated wastewater from flowing into the Ganga with 31 major drains between Danapur Cantonment and Mittan Ghat to be connected to sewage treatment plants (STPs) through interception and diversion (I&D) technology.




Three STPs will be constructed at Digha Canal , Mandiri and Mittan Ghat, with a combined treatment capacity of 348 million litres per day (MLD). The Rs 843-crore project, planned by Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (Buidco) under Namami Gange , is scheduled to begin after the monsoon and be completed by early 2028.




The Mandiri STP will have a capacity of 245 MLD and cost around Rs 616.55 crore. Digha Canal will have 85 MLD capacity at Rs 187 crore, while Mittan Ghat will treat 18 MLD at around Rs 39 crore. All three plants will use Sequencing Batch Reactor technology .




Seven intermediate pumping stations (IPS) have also been proposed at Danapur Cantonment, Digha Ghat Nala, Kurji Nala, Rajapur Nala, Mandiri Nala, Anta Ghat and Mittan Ghat, with a combined handling capacity of 40 crore litres per day.




Under I&D technology, structures will intercept wastewater near existing drains and divert it to STPs, reducing the need for extensive excavation and new sewage lines.




The project will extend work already undertaken on Kurji and Rajapur Nala, whose wastewater is diverted to Digha STP, where around 45 million litres is treated daily.




Patna currently has eight STPs with a combined capacity of 367 MLD, of which 222 MLD is being treated.




Buidco officials said bidding would be initiated by next month and construction was likely to begin by the end of 2026.




They added, “The planned system is also expected to reduce repeated road excavation for sewage infrastructure while creating a more integrated mechanism for collecting, pumping and treating wastewater across the city.”
