A routine walk through a Las Vegas neighbourhood turned into a life-or-death rescue when noticed smoke coming from an apartment and then heard children screaming inside. With firefighters still on their way, Angulo rushed toward the burning building, forced open a locked security door and pulled two young children from the smoke-filled apartment.



Smoke and screams led to a desperate rescue


The incident took place on December 1, 2017, at an apartment complex in east Las Vegas. Angulo, who was homeless at the time, was passing the property shortly before noon when he saw smoke coming from one of the apartments. As he approached, he heard children crying and screaming. Angulo jumped over a locked gate and made his way toward the apartment. Inside, a 3-year-old girl was trapped behind a steel security door. The door was locked, leaving the child unable to escape as smoke filled the home.




According to reports from The Washington Post, Angulo grabbed the metal door and pulled on it until he managed to bend it upward and force it open. The little girl then ran outside and wrapped her arms around him. “I just knew I had to get them out,” Angulo later said, according to The Washington Post.



He went back for a 10-month-old baby


Getting the girl outside was only the beginning. After rescuing her, Angulo noticed another child inside the apartment. Through the smoke, he could see the leg of an infant lying on the floor. He went back into the burning apartment and pulled the 10-month-old baby to safety. Both children were taken away from the building before firefighters brought the fire under control. The children were later transported to University Medical Center for treatment for minor smoke inhalation and were expected to recover. The rescue was particularly dangerous because smoke can quickly disorient people inside a burning building, while conditions can deteriorate rapidly as flames spread.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue received multiple emergency calls at approximately 11:33 a.m., reporting a fire at the apartment and children trapped inside. According to an Associated Press report carried by CBS News, the children's grandfather had been cooking when a pan caught fire. He escaped through a bedroom but was unable to reach the children because the flames had spread through the apartment. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. The blaze was brought under control in less than 10 minutes.




Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and began with cooking grease on the stove. The kitchen and living room were severely damaged, while other parts of the apartment suffered extensive heat and smoke damage. Officials estimated the property damage at approximately $50,000.



Firefighters credit passerby with saving the children


Fire officials said Angulo's intervention was crucial. Tim Szymanski of Las Vegas Fire & Rescue told local media that without the rescue, the children could have suffered severe smoke inhalation, serious burns or potentially worse consequences. The Independent also reported that firefighters credited Angulo with saving the children's lives, noting that the children were already outside by the time emergency crews arrived. The American Red Cross later assisted people displaced by the fire.



An ordinary passerby becomes an unexpected hero


What makes the rescue particularly striking is that Angulo had no connection to the family. He was simply walking past the apartment when he noticed something was wrong. He was not a firefighter or police officer. He had no protective equipment and no formal training for entering a burning building. Yet after hearing the children, he chose to act. His rescue also illustrates how quickly a residential fire can become dangerous. The National Fire Protection Association warns that modern home fires can spread rapidly, leaving occupants only a short amount of time to escape. The organisation advises families to have working smoke alarms and a practised escape plan.




For the two children in Las Vegas, however, the crucial difference that day was a passerby who noticed the smoke, heard their cries and refused to walk away. Angulo's actions turned a chance encounter into a rescue. Before firefighters could reach the apartment, he had already done what mattered most: he had found the children and brought them outside.
