Bihar LoP Tejashwi Yadav wrote to the NHRC seeking an urgent, independent inquiry into the alleged custodial death of 19-year-old Roshan Yadav in Madhubani, alleging he was brutally murdered by police and demanding action against guilty officials.

Bihar Leader of Opposition (LoP) Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday wrote to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking an independent inquiry and urgent intervention into the alleged custodial death of a 19-year-old youth in Madhubani district.

Yadav Alleges Administrative Failure and Brutality

Attacking the state government over the incident, Yadav took to social media platform X, alleging rampant administrative failure and brutality. "In Madhubani, 19-year-old Roshan Yadav was brutally murdered by the police while in police custody. A letter was written to the National Human Rights Commission to seek justice for the victim and demand strict action against the guilty officials. We will raise this matter on every platform to ensure justice," Yadav said."In the absence of governance in Bihar, we will not allow the anarchic, unrestrained, and corrupt bureaucracy and the lightweight Chief Minister with weak administrative understanding to sacrifice innocent citizens under any circumstances," he added.

Details of the Appeal to NHRC

In his letter addressed to the NHRC chairperson Justice V Ramasubramanian, Yadav stated that 19-year-old Roshan Yadav, who had been lodged in judicial custody since May 27, was found dead inside the Mandal Karagar (District Jail) at Rampatti in Madhubani on August 10. While jail authorities maintained that the youth died by suicide, the deceased's family disputed the claim, alleging murder after discovering multiple visible injury marks on his body, and claimed they were never provided written intimation of his arrest.Highlighting the deceased's humble background--survived by a widowed mother and two sisters--the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader requested the human rights body to take cognisance and call for comprehensive reports from the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Director General of Prisons, Bihar.He also urged the Commission to review CCTV footage from two police stations covering the period from the youth's arrest until his death, scrutinise mandatory medical check-up records, and examine the videography of the post-mortem alongside the magisterial inquiry report within a stipulated timeframe."The Madhubani administration indicated that a magisterial inquiry will be conducted according to the Commission's guidelines and a report will be furnished. The deceased reportedly came from a low-income poor family headed by his widowed mother and two sisters," the letter read.The RJD leader emphasised that the commission must ensure strict accountability and grant appropriate relief and compensation to the aggrieved family.
