Passengers aboard an international IndiGo flight experienced anxious moments on Friday evening (August 21) after the aircraft developed a mid-air technical snag shortly after takeoff. The flight, operating from Trichy International Airport to Singapore with 127 passengers on board, was forced to execute an emergency landing back at the originating airport.
However, before touching down safely, the aircraft had to circle in the sky for approximately two and a half hours to burn excess fuel.
According to reports, the flight departed from Trichy Airport at around 6:40 PM. Shortly after gaining altitude, the flight crew detected a technical malfunction and immediately established contact with the Trichy Air Traffic Control (ATC) to report the issue.
Standard aviation safety protocols mandate that heavy commercial aircraft reduce excess fuel weight before conducting an emergency landing to ensure a controlled and safe touchdown. Consequently, the pilots performed a controlled mid-air circling maneuver over the region for roughly 150 minutes to reduce fuel load.
Trichy Airport Director Gopalakrishnan confirmed that airport authorities, emergency response teams, and ATC remained in constant communication with the cockpit crew throughout the ordeal. After ground emergency services and security arrangements were fully prepared, the aircraft landed safely back at Trichy Airport at approximately 9:00 PM.
Following the landing, airline officials immediately arranged an alternative aircraft to transport the affected passengers onward to Singapore, ensuring minimal disruption to their travel plans.
While IndiGo has not yet released a detailed technical statement regarding the exact nature of the malfunction, this marks the second consecutive day an IndiGo flight has faced a technical issue. Just a day prior, on Thursday (August 20), an IndiGo flight scheduled from Delhi to Mangaluru experienced a technical glitch while taxiing on the runway before takeoff.
