Historical importance of Chanderi


Chanderi is considered to be the capital of Shishupala, son of Lord Krishna's aunt Shruti. It is mentioned in ancient times as Chedi kingdom. The geographical location of Chanderi has played an important role in making it prosperous. It was earlier known as Chandragiri and is located on the border of Bundelkhand and Malwa. It has also been mentioned in Mahabharata. Many grand buildings built by the Sultans of Malwa and the Rajputs of Bundel can be seen here. The rock paintings made in the caves on the river banks represent cultural heritage and artistry.

Places to visit in Chanderi


Koshak Mahal


Built during the reign of Khilji dynasty, this palace is a wonderful example of Islamic architecture. Its quadrilateral shape and three-tier structure make it special. The huge gates and windows of the palace make its architecture even more attractive.



Chanderi Fort


This fort is situated on a 71 meter high hill and its walls are 5 km long. There are three ways to reach the fort, one of which is paved. It can also be reached on foot through a gate called Khooni Darwaza.



Battisi Stepwell


This stepwell is a wonderful example of Afghan architecture. Its beautiful stairs and welcome gate make it even more grand.

This passage is located on the southern bank of Chanderi and was built overnight to welcome Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji of Malwa.



princess's fast


This tomb is a symbol of the immortal love of Mehrunissa, the daughter of the Governor of Chanderi and a general. It was built in the 15th century.

The nearest railway station to Chanderi is Lalitur and can be reached by taking a cab from Bhopal Airport. Local dishes here include Makke ki Roti, Dal Bafla, Raskheer and Semolina Laddus.


The best time to visit here is between October to March. The cost of accommodation and food for two people per day is around Rs 2.5 to 3 thousand. The maximum temperature here remains at 40 degrees Celsius and minimum at 15 to 20 degrees Celsius.
