Caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been elected as the leader of the BJP & NDA Legislature Party.

Guwahati, May 10: During a meeting at Bajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, Caretaker Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously chosen as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party on Sunday.

Union Minister J P Nadda, who served as the party’s central observer at the meeting, noted that eight proposals supporting Sarma's leadership were presented by senior BJP leaders and MLAs, facilitating his oath-taking for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam.

Nadda mentioned that the first proposal was made by Ranjit Kumar Dass, followed by contributions from Biswajit Daimary, Ajanta Neog, Rameswar Teli, Rajdeep Roy, Ashok Singhal, Pijush Hazarika, and Chakradhar Gogoi.

He also highlighted that the NDA allies, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), have expressed their support for Sarma's leadership.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini joined the meeting as a co-observer alongside Nadda.

Present at the meeting were Sarma, state BJP president Dilip Saikia, and all newly elected BJP MLAs.

After being elected as the leader of the Legislature Party, Sarma addressed the media, reaffirming the NDA alliance's commitment to the development of Assam.

“I call upon the people of Assam to continue their support. Their encouragement motivates us. We entered politics to serve the citizens of Assam. Our aim is to advance the state and position Assam among the most developed states in the nation,” he stated.

Expressing gratitude to the alliance partners for their backing, Sarma remarked that the NDA's significant mandate was a product of collective efforts.

“With the BJP's success, I extend my thanks to AGP president Atul Bora and the party workers for their assistance. I also appreciate BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary. His support enabled the BJP to secure four seats in the BTC region,” Sarma added.

Following the Legislature Party meeting, NDA leaders are set to meet Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya to formally claim the formation of the government on Sunday.

“We will approach the Governor with the backing of 102 MLAs and request permission to form the government. We will participate in the swearing-in ceremony on May 12,” Sarma concluded.

The BJP-led NDA has returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term, achieving a two-thirds majority in the 126-member Assembly, with the BJP winning 82 seats and its allies AGP and BPF securing 10 seats each.
