A former supermarket branch in a Norfolk town is set for a major transformation after plans to divide the building into multiple new units were approved. The site, which previously operated as a Lidl store, closed earlier this year after the retailer relocated to a new outlet nearby. Lidl has more than 1,000 stores across the UK.

Since shutting its Kingston Road premises in Dereham, the building has stood empty. Now, proposals submitted by Prime Retail Ltd have been given the green light by Breckland Council. Under the approved plans, the former supermarket will be split into four separate units.

Fast food chain KFC is set to take one of the spaces. It will be the brand's first location in Dereham.

Planning documents stated that the site meets the company's requirements in terms of population size, traffic flow, surrounding uses and overall building size.

KFC will join other well-known chains already operating in the town, including McDonald's and Subway.

Another unit will be occupied by PureGym. The fitness operator confirmed its plans on social media and is expected to include functional training equipment, weight machines, dedicated fitness class areas, changing facilities and circulation space.

Bakery giant Greggs is also lined up to open at the site. This will be the company's second branch in Dereham.

A retail statement confirmed the new shop would be "in addition to, not in replacement of" its existing store in the Market Place.

It is not yet known which business will move into the fourth and final unit.

Changes to the site will also include a reduction in parking spaces, with the total number dropping from 62 to 54.

Separate entrance doors will be created for each of the new units.

Planning documents say that there were "no sequentially preferable sites" in Dereham that were both available and suitable for the proposed occupiers.
