Karthu has received the famous ‘Clarendon Scholarship’, the total value of which is approximately Rs 1.8 crore. Karthu, who has been fond of books since childhood, believes that it is important to dream big, but it requires sustained efforts to make them come true.


What is the Clarendon Scholarship?


The Clarendon Fund is one of the most prestigious and well-funded scholarship programs at the University of Oxford. It is open to meritorious students from all over the world and approximately 200 students are given this honor every year. The special thing about this scholarship is that it does not require any separate application, when a student applies for a Master’s or PhD at Oxford, he or she is automatically considered for this scholarship. This achievement of Karthu reflects his academic qualifications and the depth of his research proposal.


Who is Karthu Anil Chandran Geethambili?


The foundation of Karthu’s success was laid in his childhood itself. Born in Thrikkunnappuzha, Alappuzha, Karthu’s father Anil Chandran and mother Geethambili inspired her and her brother Rishi to always be alert. Since childhood, he was encouraged to read newspapers daily and write his opinion on what he read. Karthu says his parents ensured that lack of resources never came in the way of his studies and learning opportunities.


Karthu wants to work on social issues


Karthu is not limited to bookish knowledge only, but he is also very sensitive towards social issues. She believes that in today’s world where women, Dalits, tribals and minority groups are constantly becoming victims of discrimination, it is imperative to question old and conservative beliefs. She wants to work towards becoming the voice of marginalized communities. His research is also inspired by the same idea of ​​whose voices are being heard and whose voices are being suppressed.

Karthu’s educational journey


Karthu’s educational journey started from Dubai, where he received his early education. He then graduated in Social Sciences from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Tuljapur. According to Karthu, TISS awakened the scholar within him and exposed him to social realities. The professors there, especially Dr. Byasa Moharana and Dr. Anu K. Antony developed critical thinking in him. Due to this guidance, he obtained a master’s degree in Anthropology from the London School of Economics (LSE), where he also received a partial scholarship of Rs 16 lakh.


Karthu is doing research on anthropology.


Currently Karthu is doing research on Anthropology under the guidance of Professor Alpa Shah at Oxford University. She has chosen Wayanad and surrounding areas of Kerala for her research work, where she will study the lives of indigenous communities and their displacement issues. Her goal is not only to earn a PhD degree, but she also wants to work with organizations and policy makers working on indigenous rights to improve the quality of life and identity of tribal communities.


Karthu’s advice for students


For future applicants, Carthu suggests that a strong academic record as well as an impressive research proposal and good letters of recommendation (LOR) are a must. She advises students to stay in touch with their professors and apply before the deadlines.
