Meta Layoffs Latest News: Tech giant Meta is once again in the headlines, but this time the reason is its new layoff plan. The company has made it clear that it is now rapidly shifting its focus towards Artificial Intelligence i.e. AI. Under this strategy, about 10% of the workforce i.e. about 8,000 employees are going to lose their jobs, and 6,000 vacant posts will also be eliminated. The move will come into effect from May 20 and is being seen as an effort to make the company's operations more "lean and efficient".
Under the leadership of Mark Zuckerberg, the company is now focusing its full strength on AI. According to the internal message, the company wants to do more work with less resources and the money saved should be invested in new technology, especially generative AI. Today the competition in the AI sector has become very intense. Companies like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic are already trying to get ahead in this race. In such a situation, Meta does not want to be left behind.
Meta's spending on AI is no small step. In the year 2025, the company will spend about $ 72.2 billion only on data centers and AI infrastructure. And there are indications that by 2026 this expenditure could exceed $115 billion. Not just infrastructure, the company is also investing in talent and AI startups to achieve bigger goals like “superintelligence”.
The company has also announced compensation for the affected employees. Employees working in America will be given 16 weeks of salary, along with an additional two weeks of pay for every year of service. The package will be almost similar in other countries too, although there may be some local variations. This decision of the company has come at a time when the company is soon going to release its quarterly earnings figures. During this time, big companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet will also declare their results.
If you are thinking that this is happening for the first time in Meta, then it is not so. Even before this, Meta has removed about 1,000 employees associated with its Metaverse projects. Even in March, hundreds of people lost their jobs in many teams. Apart from this, the company is now increasing the use of AI tools by reducing dependence on third parties in tasks like content moderation.
Mark Zuckerberg has already made it clear that 2026 could be the year when AI will completely change the way we work. He believes that in the future, big projects, which earlier used to be done by the entire team together, will now be done by only one skilled person. Meta has also started a new system for this, which tracks the way employees work (such as keystrokes and mouse activity), so that AI can be trained better. Simply put, Meta is now following the strategy of more work with fewer people and rapid growth based on AI. This layoff is not just a step to reduce expenses, but it shows that the nature of jobs in the tech industry is going to change rapidly in the coming times.
