New Zealand's cricket team is set to reintegrate seasoned players Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine for their upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, as reported by the ICC. Both Bates, who suffered a quad injury, and Devonshire, who had a broken finger, along with Plimmer, who dealt with a shoulder issue, have successfully completed their rehabilitation and are ready to participate in the series starting on March 15 at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
Sophie Devine will make her return to the team for the first time since the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, as New Zealand gears up for their title defense in the prestigious women's T20 tournament scheduled in England later this year.
The squad comprises 15 players, with Bree Illing and Polly Inglis participating in the initial two matches. They will be replaced later in the series by Lea Tahuhu and Devonshire as part of the team's strategy to manage player rotation.
Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed enthusiasm about the return of Bates and Devine, emphasizing the importance of their experience. He stated, "We are thrilled to have Suzie and Sophie back for this series. Their on-field skills are exceptional, but their cultural contributions to the team are equally significant. I look forward to seeing them interact with the newer squad members."
Sawyer also mentioned Flora Devonshire's recent struggles with injuries, saying, "Flora faced a series of injuries that sidelined her for some time, which is tough for any player. It's great to have her back in shape and ready to contribute when needed."
The New Zealand squad for the T20I series against South Africa includes: Melie Kerr (C), Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Georgia Plimmer, Izzy Sharp, Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Flora Devonshire**, Lea Tahuhu**, Bree Illing**,* Polly Inglis*. (*First two T20s only, **Last three T20s only).
