The Indian senior women's national football team is set to play a pivotal match against Chinese Taipei in their final Group C game of the AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026. This crucial encounter will take place at the Western Sydney Stadium in Sydney, Australia, on Tuesday, starting at 14:30 IST.
Currently, India sits at the bottom of Group C, having lost both of their previous matches against Vietnam (1-2) and Japan (0-11), leaving them with no points. Japan leads the group with six points, while both Chinese Taipei and Vietnam are tied with three points each in second and third place.
Despite the challenging situation, the Blue Tigresses can still advance to the quarter-finals if they secure a victory over Chinese Taipei by at least two goals and if Japan defeats Vietnam in the concurrent match. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will progress to the knockout stage.
India's head coach, Amelia Valverde, stressed the need to move past the previous results. "The two matches we played were quite different. Our priority now is to quickly shift our focus to this upcoming match. We are determined to prepare thoroughly," Valverde stated.
She described the match against Chinese Taipei as a 'virtual final,' acknowledging its significance. "We understand the importance of this game. We have already moved on from our last match and must treat this opportunity with the seriousness it deserves," she added.
Valverde expressed confidence in her players, stating, "They are focused and working hard to capitalize on our chances. This is a crucial moment for us to create history for our country, and we must seize this opportunity to qualify and finish this phase successfully."
Valverde is keen on implementing a specific style of play while recognizing the challenges posed by Chinese Taipei. "If we can replicate the performance we showed in the second half of our first match, we will be close to achieving success. Chinese Taipei is well-organized in their gameplay," she noted.
She highlighted their strong defensive performance in their opening match and their tactical adjustments against Japan. "We need to bring intensity, maintain possession, and push forward into attack. This is one of our strengths, and we will aim to leverage it," Valverde explained.
Midfielder Shilky Devi Hemam echoed the coach's sentiments, viewing the match against Chinese Taipei as a critical opportunity. "We have learned from our previous game, and I believe this match will be special for us," Shilky remarked.
"It's a significant chance for us, and we must make the most of it," she added.
Chinese Taipei, in contrast, has a simpler path ahead, as a draw would suffice for them to advance to the knockout stage. However, head coach Prasobchoke Chokemor is pushing for a win. "The team feels more confident after our last match, but I must ensure they do not become overconfident. While a draw could secure our qualification, we will play to win and not focus on other matches," he stated.
Chokemor acknowledged the threat posed by India, particularly from forward Manisha Kalyan. "We do not expect an easy match against India, as I am familiar with their capabilities. We are particularly focused on containing Manisha Kalyan, who has shown remarkable speed, and we will keep a close watch on her," he concluded.
