Port Vale are bottom of League One yet produced a stunning performance to down Premier League side Sunderland 1-0 in the shock of the fifth round. Ben Waine's 28th-minute goal - their only shot on target in the match - was enough for the Stoke-based club to progress.

"It's a bit of a pain in the bum, to be honest!" manager Jon Brady said after the win over Sunderland, referring to their fight against relegation.

"It is really because what it's doing for us is adding to our fixture list and as you saw we lost one of our best centre-halves [Cam Humphreys] and we haven't got the size of the squad to cope with the amount of games at the moment. It's a privilege, but it's tough as well."

Premier League frontrunners Arsenal overcame Mansfield Town 2-1 in the fifth round through goals by Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, avoiding the same fate suffered by Burnley in the previous round. Chelsea survived a scare by beating 10-man Wrexham 4-2 in extra time, while City won 3-1 at Newcastle to record their fourth victory of the season over Eddie Howe's side.

Southampton took a Premier League scalp in the fifth round by knocking out Fulham 1-0 thanks to a late penalty from Ross Stewart at Craven Cottage. Liverpool avenged their league defeat by Wolves earlier in the week with a 3-1 win at Molineux and Leeds eased past Norwich 3-0 at Elland Road.
