Manchester United star Bryan Mbeumo has confessed that the set-piece strategy which helped him score the opening goal against Tottenham had been attempted in training - but failed spectacularly. United emerged victorious with a 2-0 win over 10-man Tottenham at Old Trafford, continuing their impressive streak under interim boss Michael Carrick.

United approached the clash against Thomas Frank brimming with confidence following victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham. The strong form has propelled them into fourth position in the Premier League standings.

Their task became easier in the 29th minute when Spurs skipper Cristian Romero received a straight red card for a challenge on United midfielder Casemiro. Carrick's team capitalised on their numerical superiority just under 10 minutes later.

An expertly executed set-piece routine from a corner saw the ball reach Mbeumo on the edge of the box. He finished clinically, placing his shot low into the bottom right-hand corner.

Speaking to the club following the match, Mbeumo made a startling revelation about how that set-piece routine had performed on the training ground in the days leading up to the weekend.

"It didn't work out at the training ground, I just like put the ball over the fences," he admitted. "But yeah, today was the most important and we are really happy with the goal."

It was just nine minutes before the final whistle, before United were able to secure the three points.

Bruno Fernandes expertly guided the ball into the net from Diogo Dalot's deep cross, making it 2-0.

This victory cemented United's position in fourth place in the table, just ahead of Chelsea's Premier League showdown with Wolves. Liam Rosenior's squad emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline, once again narrowing the gap to a single point.

United won't have much time to bask in their win, as attention swiftly turns to the midweek fixtures. The Red Devils are set to journey down to the London Stadium on Tuesday night for a face-off with West Ham (8.15pm kick-off).

The Hammers celebrated a 2-0 away victory against Burnley on Saturday, closing the gap on Nottingham Forest at the lower end of the table.
