Medical professionals have disclosed that a particular "common dietary supplement" might offer relief for people living with diabetes and anxiety. And it could prove beneficial for those with hypertension - otherwise known as high blood pressure.

According to Health, the compound in question is magnesium taurate, which combines the mineral magnesium with taurine, an amino acid. Specialists suggest that alongside these advantages, it may enhance eye, heart and brain function.

They explain: "The available evidence about the benefits of magnesium taurate comes primarily from animal studies. It suggests that magnesium taurate may help to lower blood pressure, improve heart health, regulate insulin sensitivity, prevent and treat cataracts, lower anxiety, and help manage the effects of a traumatic brain injury."

Blood pressure reduction and cardiovascular wellness

Many people have previously used magnesium, as this mineral by itself is recognised for managing blood pressure levels. Yet some opt for magnesium taurate over standard magnesium, reports the Mirror.

Health notes that this preference exists because it's "more easily absorbed and causes fewer side effects such as diarrhoea." Additionally, magnesium-based supplements, magnesium taurate included, may assist in preventing and managing elevated cholesterol, abnormal heart rhythms, cardiac arrest, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Reducing anxiety

When discussing cardiovascular health, experiencing a racing pulse during periods of worry or anxiousness can be genuinely frightening. Fortunately, this supplement may help to ease tension, diminishing anxious feelings and providing stress relief.

"In a 2019 study, magnesium taurate was found to be especially effective in reducing anxiety when compared with other magnesium compounds", Health states.

Are you living with diabetes?

People managing type 2 diabetes alongside other metabolic disorders frequently encounter insulin resistance. This condition impacts the body's capacity to control blood glucose levels effectively.

Studies indicate that taurine could potentially help lower blood glucose whilst boosting insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, insufficient magnesium has been linked with a heightened likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.

Early findings suggest that magnesium taurate might also strengthen the body's insulin response, possibly diminishing diabetes risk.

NHS magnesium warning

The NHS explains that a magnesium assessment measures the quantity of magnesium present in your bloodstream and might prove useful for certain individuals. This metallic substance is predominantly stored in bones and remains "essential to life."

They note: "Abnormal magnesium levels can occur in conditions that affect the functioning of your kidneys or intestines. A magnesium test may be recommended as part of a series of tests if you have symptoms such as nausea, weakness, twitching, cramping or cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat).

"You may have abnormally low levels of magnesium, calcium or potassium in your blood."
