Hong Kong. A major accident occurred at Hong Kong International Airport early Monday morning, in which two people died. A cargo plane coming from Dubai met with an accident while landing at Hong Kong International Airport and the plane skidded off the runway and fell into the sea. During this, the plane collided with a ground-service vehicle, in which two people died. Both the deceased were ground service workers.

The accident occurred at around 3:53 a.m. on Monday morning when Emirates SkyCargo flight EK9788, operated by Turkey’s Air ACT, landed on the northern runway 07R after taking off from Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) in Dubai, reports the Hong Kong Standard. The Boeing aircraft skidded off the runway and partially sank into the adjacent sea. The plane had veered to the left during the landing roll.

Runway closed

The Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK) confirmed the accident, saying the plane overshot the north runway during landing and partially sank into the sea near the airport perimeter. “The north runway of Hong Kong International Airport has been closed following the incident. The south and central runways remain operational,” the authority said in a statement.

One staff member missing

Local broadcaster TVB reported that a rescue operation was immediately launched. The airport said four crew members and one ground staff member on board the plane were rescued, while another person was missing early in the morning after the crash.
