Sometimes, Bollywood’s history reveals the most unexpected twists of fate, especially when it comes to iconic roles. Can you imagine a legendary actor turning down a film that later became a massive success and earned another celebrated star an award? Well, that’s exactly what happened with the 1997 film ‘Virasat.’
This acclaimed movie, which was a brilliant Hindi remake of Kamal Haasan’s powerful Tamil film ‘Thevar Magan,’ featured a central and pivotal character: Raja Thakur, the respected patriarch of a village. When the Hindi adaptation was in the making, the filmmakers, including Kamal Haasan himself (who also wrote the original story), reportedly had their eyes on the incomparable Dilip Kumar for this significant role. Given Dilip Kumar’s unparalleled ability to embody complex and profound characters, he seemed like the perfect fit to bring Raja Thakur to life.
However, for a few interesting reasons, Dilip Kumar ultimately decided to pass on ‘Virasat.’ Reports suggest he was occupied with his own directorial venture ‘Kalinga’ at the time and, due to health concerns, preferred to take on lighter roles. He also found the theme of ‘Thevar Magan’ to be quite violent and had reportedly initially declined to be part of its Hindi remake even when Kamal Haasan earnestly “begged” him to consider it. After Dilip Kumar’s refusal, the role was reportedly offered to other prominent actors like Raaj Kumar and Naseeruddin Shah, before finally finding its way to the versatile Amrish Puri.
And that’s where the magic truly happened! Amrish Puri, known primarily for his formidable villainous turns, especially as the unforgettable Mogambo, stepped into Raja Thakur’s shoes. This role allowed him to showcase an entirely different facet of his immense talent, portraying a strong, dignified, and emotionally resonant village elder. His performance was not just praised; it was transformative, leading him to win the coveted Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The story of ‘Virasat’ and Amrish Puri’s award-winning performance is a wonderful testament to how casting decisions, even those that seem like a loss at first, can sometimes pave the way for extraordinary success and allow other actors to deliver career-defining roles. It’s truly one of those fascinating Bollywood anecdotes that highlight the unpredictable journey of filmmaking!
