Adani Power and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) signed an agreement on Saturday to jointly build the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project in Bhutan. They also reached an initial understanding on a power purchase deal and signed a concession agreement with the Royal Government of Bhutan. The signing took place in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
With these agreements both companies can now move forward with the Wangchhu hydro project which will be developed under the BOOT (Build Own Operate Transfer) model. “Bhutan has set an example for the world in sustainable growth and we are proud to be part of its renewable energy journey. The Wangchhu project will help meet Bhutan’s power needs during the winter when hydro generation is usually low. In summer the extra electricity will be exported to India” said SB Khyalia CEO of Adani Power.
The Wangchhu hydroelectric project will involve an investment of around Rs 60 billion to build the power plant and its supporting infrastructure.
The detailed project report has already been completed and construction is likely to begin in the first half of 2026. The project is expected to be finished within five years after work starts.
“Since the 1960s Bhutan and India have worked hand in hand to tap Bhutan’s vast hydropower potential. This partnership has brought great benefits to both countries and has become a foundation of the close and friendly ties we share” said Dasho Chhewang Rinzin Managing Director of DGPC.

High-Income Gross National Happiness Country
Bhutan aims to become a High-Income Gross National Happiness (GNH) Country in the next decade. To achieve this reliable and affordable electricity from renewable sources like hydropower and solar will be key to driving further investments and supporting economic growth. By 2040 the country plans to add 15000 MW of hydropower capacity and 5000 MW of solar power.
“DGPC is pleased to partner with the Adani Group for the Wangchhu project. With Adani’s strong technical and financial capabilities along with their vast experience we are confident this project will be completed quickly and set a benchmark for future developments” Rinzin added.
The Wangchhu project is the first hydropower venture under the MoU signed in May 2025 between the Adani Group and DGPC to jointly develop 5000 MW of clean energy in Bhutan.
Both sides are also holding talks on additional projects as part of this long-term partnership.
Adani Power which is part of the Adani Group is India’s largest private thermal power producer. The company has a total installed thermal capacity of 18110 MW across twelve plants located in Gujarat Maharashtra Karnataka Rajasthan Chhattisgarh Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.
