India US Trade: The business talks between India and the US about the ‘Non Veg Milk’ business stopped after reaching a significant turn. India has categorically denied that it will not allow the import of ‘non-veg milk’ (a milk-product category that is obtained from animals that had been made by animal-based fodder-based fodder, blood, fish etc.
In fact, amidst the talks of the Indo-US Trade Agreement, Washington DC wishes that New Delhi open its dairy product market, but India is emphasizing strict authentication to ensure that imported milk comes from cows who have not been fed animal-based products like meat or blood, it can be proved. Due to religious and cultural sensitivity, India considers it a “immoral red line” for itself.
In addition to protecting the interests of farmers amidst intensive talks between top negotiaters on the Indo-US trade agreement, cultural sensitivity is also a major issue regarding ‘non-vegetarian milk’. Indo-US trade talks that aim to gain an agreement and increase bilateral trade by $ 500 billion by 2030. In this path, stopping the trade deal on the dairy product has emerged as a big obstacle. Along with agriculture, the dairy area of New Delhi has also emerged as a big red line.
The root cause of trade deadlock is the emphasis on India’s strict authentication, ensuring that imported dairy products come from cows that are not fed animal-based products such as meat or blood. Ajay Srivastava of New Delhi -based Think Tank Global Trade Research Institute (GTRI) told the news agency PTI, “Imagine, imagine that you are eating butter made of milk of the cow that has been fed any other cow meat and blood. India will probably never allow it.”
According to Ajay Srivastava of the Global Trade Research Institute (GTRI), ‘India is not only for consumption of milk, dairy products are also an essential part of everyday religious rituals in India.’
Washington DC has termed India’s stubborn stance on dairy and agriculture as an ‘unnecessary trade barrier’. India, the world’s largest milk producing country, is fully prepared to protect millions of small dairy farmers.
According to sources, India has clearly refused to make any compromise on dairy. Please tell that this area fills the stomach of more than 1.4 billion people. Provides employment to more than 8 crore people. These include mainly small farmers.
According to the report of The Indian Express, India still levies high fees. 30%on cheese, 40%on butter and 60%on milk powder, making it difficult to import from low cost producers such as New Zealand and Australia. Additionally, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairy of India compulsory veterinary certification for food imports. This ensures that all products including dairy products are obtained from animals that are not given a bovine diet. This is a requirement that the US has criticized in the World Trade Organization.
Milk connected to the taste and tradition of India receives many substances that are widely used in homes, such as curd, ghee, butter, cheese, buttermilk, khoya, cream and thick milk.
Non veg milk means dairy products that are made of milk of animals, which are fed meat or fed blood. According to The Seattle Times, a daily newspaper in America, “Animal food is often a mixture of animal parts.” Actually, in the US, ‘cows’ are still allowed to give such food, which may include boar, fish, chickens, horses, even cats or dog parts. Cattle are also given pigs and horse blood for protein. Apart from this, Tallow is given to become fat, which is a hard fat made of animal parts.
It is considered immoral to consume such milk from a cultural and religious perspective. People’s attitude towards this is very sensitive. India wants assurance from America that imported milk is not produced in this way. Whereas America cows are allowed to feed a non -vegetarian diet, which includes poultry -rearing by -products and fish food.
The main issue of dairy products between India and the US is whether the US can guarantee that imported milk is produced only from cows eating vegetarian diet, as this difference in approach is a major obstacle in the ongoing business talks between the two countries.
