For the first time in 10 years, will have the pleasure of entering a major championship as a defending champion. His dramatic victory at the last month not only broke his decade-long major hoodoo but also saw the 35-year-old complete the career grand slam.

McIlroy has now set his sights on the unprecedented yearly grand slam, and given his typically solid record at Quail Hollow, there are plenty tipping him to make it two from two for majors in 2025. Preparations for this year's have been stunted somewhat though, given rainstorms disrupted Tuesday and Wednesday's practice days.

However, that's unlikely to stop McIlroy from going out and attacking the course where he won his first-ever PGA Tour title back in 2010. He'll make up part of a star-studded grouping, with last year's PGA Championship and Open winner Xander Schauffele, as well as the current world No.1 , having been matched with McIlroy for the first two rounds.

Elsewhere, Justin Thomas enters the tournament in good stead, having finished second at last week's Truist Championship, a couple of weeks on from winning the RBC Heritage. Shane Lowry also looked in good nick at the Truist before misfortune and mistakes on the back nine handed the title to Sepp Straka. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood, who still hasn't won a PGA Tour title of any kind, has impressed so far in 2025.
