Controversy has arisen over the traditional procession of 'Palm Sunday' in the national capital Delhi this year. A major Catholic body has termed this decision of Delhi Police as 'shocking and unfair'. The institution says that this procession has been held in a peaceful manner every year, and this time it has been stopped without any proper reason.

Catholic Association of the Archdayosis of Delhi (CAAAD) President A.C. Michael has strongly criticized this decision. He said in a statement, "This is a very shocking and inappropriate decision. This procession has always been peaceful and has been held with coordination with the police and administration. Stopping it only by citing law and order and traffic reflects double standards, as other religious events have been allowed."

What is 'Palm Sunday' and its importance?

'Palm Sunday' is an important religious day for the Christian community, which is celebrated in memory of Jesus Christ's arrival at Jerusalem. It is believed that when Jesus Christ reached Jerusalem, his followers welcomed him with palm leaves. The same tradition is still kept alive as a procession worldwide.

Police silence

So far no formal response has come from Delhi Police to this issue. According to sources associated with the event, traffic and security reasons have been cited behind the procession, but no clear details were shared.

Chief Minister protested

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has also joined this dispute. Describing this decision as a violation of religious freedom, he said, "It is extremely condemnable by Delhi Police to organize 'Kuruthola Pradakshinam' (Palm Sunday procession) in Sacred Heart Cathedral. It is extremely condemnable. It is a step to hurt religious faith."

This dispute has come to light at a time when questions are being raised on the monitoring and permission process regarding religious events across the country. The Christian community has protested as an attack on religious freedom.

Will the event be held ahead?

The situation is not clear about whether an alternative event will be organized or the court will be moved. The Catholic institution says that it will make further strategies through peace and dialogue.
