Want to try ChatGPT Plus features for free? OpenAI is giving these users a chance

OpenAI has some good news for college students as they will receive free access to ChatGPT Plus until the end of May 2025. The offer announced recently on X will only be available for those studying in the United States and Canada.

The ChatGPT Plus subscription generally costs $20 (Rs 1,700 approx) per month, but eligible customers will not be charged for access to OpenAI’s deep research and numerous reasoning models, as well as limited access to Sora video generation.

Taking to X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote, “ChatGPT plus is free for college students in the US and Canada through May!”

The offer is a part of the company’s limited promotion, which includes access to GPT-4o, image production, enhanced voice mode and research tools that are usually only available to paying users.

According to a report by Forbes, college students are already one of ChatGPT’s most active users, with more than one-third of U.S. individuals aged 18 to 24 using the platform. Approximately 25 percent of their inquiries are about academic work. These questions showcase that students are not only assessing features but also forming habits and modifying how they learn, revise and explore ideas.

How to Get Free Offer?

OpenAI says for this offer, students must be enrolled in a degree-granting school in the United States or Canada.

Before claiming access to the free ChatGPT Plus subscription, OpenAI needs users to validate their student identity via SheerID’s safe verification system.

Students who have already paid for the service will receive two months of access at no further cost.

What does ChatGPT Plus Offer

The free version of ChatGPT already comes with ChatGPT-4o mini, as well as limited access to GPT-4o and o3-mini models, but the Plus subscription provides access to deep research and different reasoning models. These are: o1, o3-mini, and o3-mini-high. The paid subscription includes access to a research peek of the GPT-4.5 model, which was earlier announced in February.

Not just this, ChatGPT Plus also allows users to upload more files, send more messages and create more images as compared to the free version. Subscribers also get access to enhanced voice mode, which supports video and screen sharing.

Notably, Students can have free access to ChatGPT Plus from March 31 to May 31, 2025. The offer is valid for two months once claimed.
