Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi, is a crop festival in the spring which is widely celebrated by all Punjabis in the Punjab region, no matter what their religion is. According to the almanac, Vaisakhi is a very important day for the people of Punjab, especially Sikhs. Vaisakhi is also celebrated as a Sikh New Year on the basis of Hindu calendar. This day is usually celebrated every year on 13 or 14 April. This tenth Sikh Guru also reminds of the formation of Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh.
Vaisakhi will be celebrated on 14 April this year. According to the almanac, Vaishakhi Sankranti will be on April 14 at 03:30 am.
Vaisakhi was earlier celebrated as a crop festival in the Punjab region, which symbolizes the beginning of the new solar year and the ripening of rabi crops. However, this day gained great importance in 1699 when the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh chose this day to lay the foundation of the Khalsa Panth.
On this historic day, Guru Gobind Singh gathered thousands of Sikhs in Anandpur Sahib and called upon the volunteers to be completely dedicated to their religion. He initiated the first five Sikhs, known as Panj Pyare (five cute) through a holy baptism ceremony called Amrit Sanchar. It marked the birth of Khalsa, which was a community of saints committed to maintain righteousness and protect the oppressed.
Sikh people around the world celebrate the festival of Vaisakhi with vibrant processions, prayer meetings and community ceremonies, respecting their legacy and values set by Guru Gobind Singh. This festival is also a traditional crop festival, especially for farmers, who celebrate the ripening of crops.
