All foreigners residing in the United States for over 30 days are required to register with the government as stated by the federal government. The rule has been endorsed by the Trump administration and even a federal court, detailing consequences for failure to adhere ranging from fines, imprisonment, or even deportation.
Trump’s Takeover – Registration is Compulsory for Non-Citizens
Every foreign citizen is required to register within 30 days of their entry in to the US regardless of their immigration status. This entails working visa holders, green card holders, students or anyone possessing any legal documents. All individuals are required to carry proof of their legal status at all times.
Non compliance with the regulations will lead to fines, up to $5,000, imprisonment for a period of up to 30 days, or both. In addition to that, deportation procedures will be initiated for the offenders with the possibility of a permanent ban on re entering the US.
Minors and New Entrants Need to Follow These Guidelines
Foreign citizens under 14 years of age are exempt until their birthday. Once they turn 14, they need to register and submit fingerprints within a month. Those landing in US on or after April 11 should also register if they stay beyond 30 days.
Legal and Public Response
The policy has been controversial to immigrant rights groups. Supporters advocate that it circumvents the procedure of public comment, which is required by the Administrative Procedure Act. All attempts to legally bar the rule were refused by U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden, stating the advocacy groups lacked legal standing to dispute the measure.
Stricter Enforcement on Aliens
Immigration attorneys warn that both undocumented and documented immigrants are required to comply with more stringent procedures. Aside from registration, individuals ideally should possess documentation showing their legal status to avoid sanctions during routine checks or enforcement actions.
