Watermelon is beneficial for health, but adulterated watermelon can be dangerous. The Food Safety Department advises to identify adulteration in watermelon yourself and avoid eating adulterated watermelon.

Adulterated vs Pure Watermelon Test : As soon as summer arrives, the markets are filled with watermelons. Everyone likes this juicy, cool and hydration-rich fruit. But now even this fruit has not been able to escape adulteration. Recently, the Food Safety Authority (FSSAI) has seized more than 2,000 kg of adulterated watermelons in Tamil Nadu. Synthetic colors, chemicals injected to increase sweetness and harmful preservatives were found to be used in these watermelons.

The food department has warned against eating such watermelons. So now the question is how to identify whether the watermelon you are eating is real or adulterated. Let us know some such tests by which you can identify adulterated watermelons...

Easy home tests to identify adulterated watermelon

FSSAI has asked people to check for adulterated watermelon. For this, put the cut pieces in a glass. Artificial colours separate when put in water. Apart from this, adulteration can also be detected by cotton ball test. For this, cut the watermelon in half and rub its red part with a cotton ball. This can tell whether any colour has been mixed in it or not.

If the cotton ball remains clean, then the fruit is natural. If it turns red, it is a sign of adulteration. Also, rub the watermelon piece with a white tissue or paper. If the color sticks to the paper, then it is not safe to eat.

Identify adulteration in watermelon through these methods too

1. If the watermelon looks too red and shiny when cut, be careful. Too bright red color can often be a sign of synthetic dye.

2. Watermelons given chemical sugar or injections are often sticky.

3. A real watermelon has a light yellow or cream colored patch on the bottom surface. If this is not there, be suspicious.

4. Real watermelon has a fresh smell, while the fake one has a slight chemical-like smell.

5. Some fruit sellers apply wax or polish on the peel, which gives it artificial shine.
