Anup Bhandari ’s usual confidence when he goes on floors with a new film has got an extra edge this time. The filmmaker who will head to shoot Sudeep starrer
Billa Ranga Baasha, has incorporated the technique of pre-visualisation before filming. “It’s a unique attempt as the process of planning and visualising scenes is done before the actual shooting. It’s like creating a rough version of the movie using storyboards, 3D animations, or digital tools. This saves both time and money because we know exactly what will unfold when we start shooting… there are no surprises,” shares Anup.
WE HAVE EXPERIMENTED A LOT WITH TECHNOLOGY ’
It’s important to know technology, but also train yourself to use it. As an engineer, my knowledge comes in handy, and I have employed these skills in the past to even become the dubbing engineer for my films during a pandemic. For BRB, we’ve even experimented with an actor’s voice for dubbing—just a few hours of voice data, and you can generate dialogue in any language. The AI takes the original English input and translates it while maintaining about 80% of the original intonation. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s almost there. It’s a whole new way of filmmaking.
‘THERE’S A NOTION THAT BIG-BUDGET FILMS ARE THE WAY FORWARD’
I’ve seen newcomers with small films that genuinely connect with audiences. These films generated interest even before release. In the last few years, barring a few, many big films haven’t drawn people to theatres. If a film can entertain, the budget doesn’t matter. Yes, a big star. There have been many newcomers who have made small budget films that the audience have connected with or a big budget flick brings hype and expectations. That’s powerful—but it’s also a huge responsibility. It’s tough for a newcomer, but small films also do brilliantly if made well.
‘SUDEEP MAKES SURE EVERYONE ON SET IS EXCITED ABOUT WHAT THEY’RE DOING’
He carries this aura. I remember when we shot Vikrant Rona, there was a scene where he finds his daughter’s dress in a wardrobe and holds it. He wanted a certain lullaby song to be played when he did the scene. I saw tears in our DOP’s eyes. Sudeep sir wasn’t just acting, he was living that moment.
