A certified Manchester United and England legend in his playing days, Wayne Rooney now finds himself between managerial posts acting as a fresh pundit on Amazon's coverage of the UEFA Champions League.

, 39, racked up 559 appearances at Old Trafford, scoring a club record 253 goals as captain and a five-time Premier League winner. For his country it was 120 appearances, also taking the captaincy and getting a then-record 53 strikes for the Three Lions.

Such pedigree and leadership meant he was naturally tipped to progress into management, which he has done, though not with the same extent of success.

Taking charge of Derby County immediately after retirement the club were locked in a struggle with the powers that be over their finances and despite his best efforts a points deduction saw to it that the Rams were relegated.

Two seasons in the MLS at DC United came to a mutually agreed end when goals were not met, then Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle saw results take a nosedive under his power over the 2023/24 and 2024/25 campaigns.

Even though Rooney has had a rocky time in management, his name is still a valuable asset. That is why Amazon moved quick to ensure he appears on Prime's coverage of the Champions League as a pundit, his next assignment being .

With that, football.london takes a look at the legend's net worth, career and next steps in detail.

What is Rooney's net worth?

According to reports, Rooney is worth a staggering £170m based on his career earnings to date. While at Man United, the forward earned a salary of approximately £300,000 per week, including his commercial partnerships with the likes of Coca-Cola, EA Sports and Nike.

When he moved to America to join DC United as a player, Rooney earned roughly £2.6m per year.

And before being sacked by Birmingham last year it was widely reported that he was earning £29,000 per week for his services at St. Andrew's, though he did actually hit back at claims over his pay packet.

"There's lots of stuff, especially with it being me. I understand that. There's lot of rumours which go round, but what's been out there is a load of rubbish, to be honest," he responded.

At Plymouth from the start of the current season until New Years' Eve, claimed he had a salary of £500k per year.

Man United return

Before his managerial career kickstarted it may have been the dream of the Old Trafford faithful to see their legend stand where Sir Alex Ferguson once stood.

Currently that role is filled by Ruben Amorim and Rooney is yet to prove why he deserves such a huge title in management.

So he is not returning to Man United for a job in the foreseeable future, but will actually be doing so for Soccer Aid.

This year's charity match is set to take place on Sunday, June 15 at Old Trafford. Five years on from hanging up his boots he is set to dust them off and play for England against the Rest of the World.

Sky Sports battle

Rooney has all the freedom in the world to choose when - or maybe if - he fancies his next go at management.

But it is clear for now the former attacker is feeling good about being a pundit. As stated, for the remainder of the season he is with Amazon Prime covering European action.

And it would appear with that future unclear beyond June, a battle could be brewing. According to reports, the streaming platform face a fight with Sky Sports and TNT Sports to secure Rooney's services as a pundit for a long-term period.

Sky cover the Premier League and Carabao Cup whilst TNT cover the Premier League and Champions League.

Additionally, it is said that BBC Sport - whom he worked with during Euro 2024 in Germany last summer - are keen to make him a new star on their revamped Match of the Day roster analysing Premier League highlights and broadcasting FA Cup coverage.
