Tesco has issued an update after shoppers complained about major shortages of cupboard staples in itsstores. Over the last few weeks, customers have taken to social media to talk about the lack of canned beans in the supermarket.

Shoppers have reported not being able to find cans of the supermarket’s own brand of kidney beans, black beans, butter beans, cannellini beans and chickpeas. Recently, one X - formerly - user posted: "Why is no one talking about the fact there is a bean shortage in @Tesco?”

Another chimed in, “What’s happening to your range of own-brand tinned beans? Nothing has been in stock for the last few weeks.” A third shopper added: "WHERE ARE THE BEANS AT TESCO."

A fourth asked the supermarket: "@Tesco how come you no longer appear to stock black beans, haricot beans, regular mixed beans or black eyed beans? they don't even show as out of stock online." A fifth joked: "Sorry, it would be absolutely impossible for me to acquire a tin of Kidney Beans to make a chilli: better have a Maccies (located next to the big Tesco)."

Tesco has kept quiet on the issue since it began to bubble at the beginning of March of this year. Since customers started reporting the issues online, the chain simply asked them to DM them about the problem.

However, it has now confirmed the reason behind the issues within its stores Tesco. The reason is due to "temporary" availability issues, although the retailer did not share what this issue was. They did not say when they expected the shortages to end.

It is understood that the US and Italy export butter and borlotti beans. Black beans primarily come from Brazil, followed by the US and Argentina. Chickpeas primarily come from India, Canada, and .

While alternative brands of beans are available on store shelves, many customers prefer Tesco’s own-brand variety due to affordability. For example, a can of Tesco's own chickpeas would set you back 49p - which is currently price matched with - but a tin of branded Napolina chickpeas would cost £1.

A tin of Tesco's Stockwell baked beans costs as little as 28p, while its Heinz Beans counterpart would set you back £1.40 - five times the price. On the shortages a Tesco spokesperson said: "We are experiencing some temporary availability issues on a small number of our own brand bean lines. We apologise for the inconvenience caused."
