The best butter in the UK has been named by British shoppers, and you’d be stunned to know that it’s not Lurpak, Danpak or the famous Président.

Butter is a cooking essential and it goes with everything. From savoury dishes to your morning crumpet or toast, it adds the richness and flavour, while also moistening bread. In a study undertaken by , 67 people blind-tasted which butter was the best, using well-known brands as well as supermarket branded alternatives. And the winner cost less than half of the price of Lurpak.

The spread was served on a slice of toast and individuals were urged to rank factors such as flavour, aroma, appearance and texture of each spreadable butter, with Lurpak being the benchmark comparable taste. The brands included , Lurpak, , , and Nordpak which is sold at Aldi.

The taste test revealed that the two best supermarket butters come from (Nordpak), with M&S (Butter Blend) coming in second place, who also received good feedback for its smoothness and balanced flavour.

Aldi's Nordpak wasn’t only chosen as the winner for its deliciousness, but also for its great value that made it to the top choice for tasters. The majority of the tasters said that its creaminess was spot-on, as well as the colour being appealing and the flavour well-balanced.

Compared to the rest of the products, Aldi’s Nordpak was also the cheapest. Priced at £2.09 for 500g, it’s not only cheaper than Lurpark, but also provides a comparable, if not better, taste for the price. The blend of butter (64%) and rapeseed oil (26%) also has water, salt and lactic cultures (milk.)

In the report from Which? it said: "This was rated one of the tastiest on test, and it's our Great Value pick, too. The creamy texture was a particular hit with our panel, with the majority of tasters finding the creaminess spot-on. People also loved its appealing colour and well-balanced flavour. As one of the cheapest tubs on test, it's a great choice if you're after a budget-friendly buttery spread."
