As the weather warms up, start to emerge from their winter hibernation, seeking warmth, food, and ideal spots to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, your home is often the perfect refuge for these to set up camp, and this is not only an annoyance, but also a health risk, as flies can spread germs and bacteria, as well as around 65 diseases.
As summer approaches, flies are starting to become more prominent. Glen Peskett, a DIY expert at Saxton Blades, recommended a surprisingly simple remedy that doesn't involve harsh chemicals. He said, "When it comes to keeping flies out of the home, many people turn to chemical solutions, but a simple, natural remedy can work wonders."
The solution is inexpensive, effective, and completely natural - and you likely have it in your fridge already: cucumbers.
The DIY specialist added: "Cucumber slices are a surprisingly effective way to repel flies. Flies hate the scent of cucumbers, particularly more bitter ones, so it's a natural deterrent for flies."
To use this natural method, place slices of cucumber around your home, focusing on areas where flies tend to congregate, such as windowsills, doorways, and near bins.
Replace the cucumber slices every few days to keep their repellent powers strong, and though it might seem slightly more tedious, it's great for a low-cost and chemical-free method to make your home less appealing to these insects.
But cucumbers aren't the only measure you can take to discourage flies from moving in, with Peskett recommending additional strategies for a fly-free home.
"If you're looking for a more permanent solution, installing fly screens can be a great way to block flies from getting in while still allowing you to enjoy fresh air," Peskett explained.
If you're feeling crafty, you can even build your own custom-sized fly screens to avoid unnecessary costs.
