Theme: "Level the Playing Field, Unite Everyone"

Every year on April 6, the world celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. This day recognizes the power of sport to drive social change, foster equality, and promote peace.

The United Nations first declared this observance in 2013, and the date was chosen to commemorate the opening of the first modern Olympic Games held on April 6, 1896.

The theme for 2025 is:

"Level the Playing Field, Unite Everyone"

This powerful message emphasizes that sports should be inclusive — free from discrimination of any kind, whether based on caste, religion, gender, or financial status. Everyone deserves equal opportunities to participate and grow through sports.

In India, sports like cricket, kabaddi, and hockey have long united people from all walks of life. The Indian government has launched various initiatives such as:

• Khelo India

• TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme)

• Fit India Movement

These programs aim to promote grassroots sports, identify talent, and provide training and financial support. National sports awards and welfare schemes further recognize and empower athletes across the country.

International Sports Day reminds us that sports are not just for entertainment or competition. They are tools for creating a more equitable, inclusive, and peaceful society.
