has never shied away from opening up about his struggles in life. Despite being one of the biggest musicians in the world at the height of his fame, life was far from easy for the singer. He has spent many years courageously speaking out about his challenges with mental health and addiction.

As the trappings of fame caught up with Elton, he became stuck in a vicious cycle of substance abuse and during one of his lowest points, attempted to take his own life. Baring his soul in the Disney+ documentary, Never Too Late, released in December 2024, the legendary musician, 78, shared a chilling account of how he once attempted suicide. Despite his career skyrocketing in 1975, Elton was suffering behind-the-scenes.

The Crocodile Rock singer confessed in the documentary: "My career was killing me, all I live for is my chart position and sex and cocaine. I felt 'there must be something more to my life than this'."

He opened up about his inability to control his drug use, saying: "I was the worst kind of person to take drugs because I couldn't have a line and then put it away, I'd have to finish it off and then I'd want more."

Recalling the depth of his addiction, Elton said: "When you drink that much and you do that much drugs, it's like I was dead and looking at it from up in heaven, thinking 'who the f*** are you? What have you become?'."

The Your Song hitmaker detailed his desperate cry for help and the impact on his family, stating: "I just wanted someone to put their arm around me, I was nervous about my family seeing what kind of state I was in."

Elton then recounted the harrowing incident where he nearly ended his life. Just days before he was set to perform at Dodgers Stadium in 1975, Elton was having lunch with family and friends at his house in Beverly Hills when he took several sleeping tablets."

Recalling the tragic nine words he told his guests, Elton said: "I've taken a bunch of tablets, I'm gonna drown.'"

Paramedics were forced to fish him from the water and pumped his stomach. His family, deeply concerned, stayed with him throughout the night before he woke up the next morning.

The show went on and Elton gave the performance of his life at Dodgers Stadium, performing to a crowd of more than 50,000 people.
